In the city, a young thief manages to escape capture by sneaking through a crowd gathered for the premiere of the film How to Tame Your Dragon and stealing a costume. After Sorrel mentions hearing of an "oracle" known as the Internet, the pair decide to visit the city. The two friends set out from the valley by night, and after a close encounter with an airplane spot a human city. Firedrake suggest to Sorrel that they instead set out in search of the Rim of Heaven, but she is reluctant to consider the idea until her father agrees with the sentiment. The dragons are greatly troubled by this development, with their leader Bottleneck insisting that they go into hiding while others, like Spinecrackle, propose fighting the humans. While spending time together one day, Firedrake and Sorrel discover that a human construction project is approaching the valley where the dragons and brownies make their home. However, the other dragons-particularly the egotistical Spinecrackle-dismiss Slatebeard as a senile old fool.

Eventually, a frustrated Nettlebrand returned to his creator's castle to brood on his hunger for dragons, while humanity forgot that dragons had ever been anything more than a myth. Petrosius, an evil alchemist, created a monstrous false dragon named Nettlebrand, whose reign of terror forced the dragons into hiding. On the way they meet Ben, a 14-year-old boy, who joins them on their journey under the pretence of being an alleged ‘Dragon Rider’. When humans threaten to invade the valley the dragons live in, Firedrake, a young silver dragon, and his best friend Sorrel, a forest brownie, sneak away in the middle of the night and secretly embark on a great quest to find the ‘Rim of Heaven’, a mystical place the other dragons consider to be a myth.
